A few weeks ago, We finally bought a nice chess set for Jason. Not one of those $5 or $10 sets from Walmart or TOys R Us with the plastic pieces that are a serious choking hazard if small children come to visit. It isn’t super fancy either. It’s more “cool” then “nice”. When we bought this set, we found ourselves in a bit of a dilemma though. Our house layout is already pretty stuffed the brim, and this doesn’t include a place for me to leave my sewing stuff set up like in the last few places we’ve lived. So where in the world were we going to put out this chess set so it was always out and ready to play?? Hmmm…
We continued on to a couple of different stores, looking at what we could use. We temporarily settled on simple black square end table. I already had one cushy black footstool/box, so we bought another to use for the seating. It’s a little low for now, but worked out Great.
Then the cats took serious notice of the new set up.
“Humm, now let me think. What move should I make next?”
“Ah Ha! Gotcha now, my li’l Bandito.”

Tell me they weren't the first to 'play' chess?
ReplyDeleteD has his eye on a set he saw in Manas (I am so afraid he'll come home with it). The pieces are Nazi Germany and Soviet..? whatev they were back in WWII. He said it looks neat/cool but I'm still trying to wrap my brain around something so unPC.
Thankfully, NO, they were the last ones to get a chance to play. Oh, hang on, I haven't played yet. Hmmm, something is very wrong here. Anyway, they like it well enough.
ReplyDeleteWe love it because it's castles and dragons and all sorts of cool stuff. Jason is actually re-painting all the pieces, and eventually the board, so it will TRUELY be HIS set :o).
As for what D wants...uhm, maybe you'll need 2 sets of pieces for that particular chess set...or post a small disclaimer by the set to acknowledge this is from a time in history. I dunno. Don't worry unless it actually enters the house.
